In the heart of beautiful Mumbles in Wales, a new Fish & Chip shop opened on 8th April 2022 called Fish Cakes & Ale. Owned by Laurence Winmill, the site was just an idea when we first met Laurence back in February 2021.
Laurence owned a café bar in the village, which at the time had closed due to Covid restrictions. He began researching Covid resilient business options where he could utilise his existing resources and knowledge. He came up with the idea of a Fish & Chip Takeaway right across the street.
Laurence did months of research looking for commercial fryers and spoke to a number of frying range manufacturers, both Dutch built and British. Laurence knew the Range was at the heart of any takeaway, and that it was a big decision to make sure he chose the right one! It wasn’t long before Laurence realised that Florigo stood out on its own as a commercial fryer manufacturer.
As someone with no experience of the Fish & Chip industry, we recommended Laurence contact the NFFF and get on a training course, which he did – and he has received nothing but support from the Federation since then.
Laurence was also looking for a supplier who could deal with odour and noise control requirements and provide additional prep equipment. At Florigo, we’ve helped many customers with their planning applications and additional requirements. We’re also a distributor for Bold Equipment, which can be easily purchased through our Florigo online shop.
Fast forward to March 2022! We commissioned a High Efficiency 4-pan Island Range, and the takeaway opened its doors on 8th April 2022. Fish Cakes & Ale has been fitted to a high standard and looks phenomenal!
We had a catch up with Laurence this week to see how things are going and he had nothing but great things to say! “Aesthetically, the range is a beautiful piece of equipment and from a frying point of view, it really is pretty special.
“Everything is new, we have had to bed everything in, get all the processes right and my staff have done a fantastic job getting all of that in place. The range has been a huge learning curve for us, but the staff are impressed with its performance. We can get through volume, the filtration system is fantastic, just a special piece of kit.
“The Bold Equipment I purchased is also impressive. We took up Robert’s advice in the early days and did the NFFF training course. I also became a member of the NFFF, and they have been a great support. We had our Florigo Frying Range training from Nick, who has continued his support after the training day and been on the end of the phone for us when we have needed him.
“We are still new, still learning and finding our way but overall, we are really pleased with everything.”
